Research and Development Division OperationsThe Company's products, by their very nature, as new technology, are heavily dependent on an intensive and broad-based program of R & D, both for the initial development of Sweet White Lupin and for the future development of new and marketable uses for Sweet White Lupin and Triticale based foods. Overlaying and supporting all the Company's divisions, will be a strong commitment to significant research and development and production capability. For the Feed Division, work will continue to aggressively develop improved varieties of Lupin and Triticale in concert with Hawaiian and other U.S. state institutions, including the University of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and the University of Hawaii School for Tropical Agricultural Research. In addition, work will be in concert with other U.S. institutions and governmental agencies. The research will include fertility, adaptability, varieties, herbicides, insecticides, and planting rates and spacing. In the Feed Division, major research projects will be conducted on agronomic and utilization characteristics, as well as feed testing and composite analysis of Sweet White Lupin and Triticale. Tests will be conducted on the replacement value of Sweet White Lupin for soybean in livestock feed, and in developing Sweet White Lupin as a feed stock for the agriculture industry. For the Industrial Division, research and development will continue with the development of texturized Lupin products (TLP), to replace texturized soy in pet foods. This Division will also be developing handling and storage standards, and determining proper microbial levels, for all products. Further study will be undertaken with Lupin fiber, protein, and oil to determine other future market opportunities. A primary focus of R & D activities will be within the Retail Division, for it is here that the greatest range of applications can be developed and the largest values-added to be realized. Near-term R & D projects for this Division will include the development of new pasta products, and new non-pasta products aimed at "niche" market opportunities. Good Grains Corporation and Good Grains International, Inc. respectively will continue to pursue these opportunities. |
